Natural Hair and the I Am Susan G. Komen Campaign 2012
In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month:
Bronx, NY native Alantheia Pena is Susan G. Komen. In the new national campaign for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, breast cancer survivors share their stories of triumph. Spotted in the October 2012 issue of Essence magazine, this advertisement highlights Alantheia as one of 4 survivors profiled for the print and digital campaign.
Her mammograms, mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries were covered by a non-profit center that receives partial funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Did you know that we as African American women have a higher incidence rate of breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women before age 40, but we are more likely to die from it (regardless of age?) (American Cancer Society 2012). In other words, we are more likely than white women to get it before age 40, but it is more likely to be fatal for us.
Let that sink in for a minute. And ask yourself, when was the last time I did a breast self-exam or had a mammogram? If you have to think about it, it may be time. I’ll be the first to admit that I do not do breast self-exams, and I need to start.
